Mephisto has opened its first downtown New York City store at 409 West Broadway in SoHo, launching a smaller-format retail concept that marks the first step in a broader plan to modernize the French comfort footwear brand's U.S. store network.

The SoHo shop breaks from the company's traditional approach of displaying nearly the full U.S. catalog. Instead, it offers a curated edit of the brand's best-known styles, a decision made deliberately for the downtown location.

"Historically we show almost a full catalog that's available in the U.S. in our stores," Logan Bird, who was promoted to president and chief executive officer of Mephisto USA in February, told FN during a store walkthrough. "But now, with this new concept, we're going to pick the product we feel like is best and what meets the demand for consumers in this area."

Why SoHo, and why now?

The location decision rests on internal sales data and years of strong sell-through at downtown specialty retailers, which pointed to SoHo as a natural home for the brand. Bird also cited the neighborhood's concentration of the brand's commercial partners.

"Most of the collaborators that we work with are down here in SoHo as well," Bird said.

The store's centerpiece is an "Iconics" wall featuring Mephisto's top styles, including the Match and Rainbow sneakers and the Barracuda. Bird said the area will also rotate in selections of the brand's collaborations throughout the year.

Bird framed the store as an answer to a question now facing every footwear retailer: what draws customers into physical space when they can buy anything from anywhere almost instantly.

"What brings them into a retail space? What makes it really interesting? How do you service that customer in a meaningful way that they want to come back?" the executive said. "It always comes back down to product at the end of the day. They want to come and shop for what they can find, and I think making it more special and unique is a big part of that."

What does the opening signal for the U.S. business?

The SoHo store is the first move in a wider effort to modernize Mephisto's U.S. retail footprint under Bird's leadership. Since he took over, Mephisto USA has focused on disciplined growth and a consistent experience across three channels: wholesale, retail and direct-to-consumer.

"Things are going really well, since I took over earlier this year," Bird said. "We've had the goal of really trying to harmonize all parts of our business while approaching really strategic growth that is balanced and well thought out. We still continue to see really strong growth in our wholesale partnerships, and really starting to see some really good life in our retail stores."

Looking ahead, Bird outlined a multi-channel agenda:

  • continued retail expansion, with the SoHo store described as "a huge milestone";
  • growth of the wholesale footprint;
  • deeper digital marketing efforts to amplify the brand;
  • a product program reviving archive styles unseen for 20 to 30 years.

"The focus for me is to continue to make sure we're meeting the consumer where they are and where they're shopping," Bird said, adding that the archive reissues should excite customers who remember the styles that built the brand.
