Paul Smith opened a two-story flagship at 929 Madison Avenue on Wednesday, adding 2,850 square feet of Upper East Side retail to a North American network the company calls central to its growth plans. The store is the British brand's second in New York, joining the Wooster Street unit in SoHo that opened in 2020, and arrives nearly 40 years after the company entered the U.S. market through a Flatiron District shop.

What does the opening signal for North America?

Danny Power, Paul Smith's president North America, framed the store as a strategic commitment rather than a single real estate decision. He said: "The opening signals a moment of real focus and energy as we sharpen what we stand for. The shop is a commitment to our ambitious plans for growth in North America."

Power also said: "Paul Smith has proudly been part of the fabric of New York for nearly 40 years, a much-loved brand by those in the know. Our new flagship on Madison Avenue is an incredibly exciting next step as we embark on a new chapter for our business in North America."

The company did not disclose the lease terms, projected revenue for the unit, or a target store count for the region. The growth intention rests on stated plans, not on published figures, and sourcing and supply-chain professionals will note that a made-to-measure offer on the second floor implies tailored production capacity behind the retail front.

How is the store configured?

The shop sits on 74th Street and carries a design modeled on Smith's home in London's Holland Park. A stucco façade carries a handcrafted needle-and-thread mosaic by French artist Alexandra Carron, a nod to the brand's tailoring heritage. Octagonal floor tiles replicate those from Smith's home hallway, and the interior mixes antique furniture with reclaimed wood paneling.

Key merchandising features include:

  • A 19th-century draper's table, once used for measuring fabrics, now displaying socks, shoes and accessories.
  • A ground-floor study housing men's and women's ready-to-wear, with walnut library chairs reupholstered in brand stripes by Mahalam's identity as Smith's longtime textile partner — Maharam — along with a pink-fringed rug.
  • A second-floor "Paul's Jet Lag Room" dedicated to tailoring, occasion wear and made-to-measure, finished with natural hessian walls, reworked parquet by British craftsmen Parquet Parquet, and a rug from a collaboration with The Rug Company.

The made-to-measure room marks the store's clearest service differentiation from the SoHo unit, and it is the operation most dependent on skilled production lead times.

What is the base behind the bet?

Paul Smith, founded in Nottingham in 1970, operates more than 100 stores across 20 countries. The U.S. network comprises four full-price stores and two outlets, meaning the Madison Avenue flagship expands a small American footprint by a significant proportional step.

The company has not announced additional North American openings, timelines or capital commitments beyond the flagship. For now, the confirmed commercial fact is one lease, one opening date and one stated intention: growth, with the scale still to be defined.
