Prada Group plans to open 10 to 15 flagship "epicenter" locations worldwide, CEO Andrea Guerra told the WWD x SKP Global Fashion & Beauty Summit in Wuhan, China, positioning Milan as "the epicenter of the epicenters."

The one-day forum appearance covered the group's strategic direction following its acquisition of Versace and the hiring of Alaïa designer Pieter Mulier as chief creative officer. Guerra set early 2027 as the stage for what he called one of the hottest debuts in the industry.

What drives Guerra's management philosophy?

Guerra, who joined Prada in 2023 after roles at LVMH, Eataly, Luxottica, Marriott and Merloni Elettrodomestici, framed compromise as a core operating principle.

"Compromise to me is one of the most neglected words of the cultural vocabulary," he said in a fireside chat with James Fallon, chief content officer at Fairchild Media Group, parent of WWD. "Compromise is generosity. Compromise allows everyone to have a positive contribution to something, and at the end, you are able to find a common ground."

He works alongside founders Patrizio Bertelli and Miuccia Prada, and said he thrives on first-generation leadership. Brand DNA evolves slowly, he stressed, and "if you punch it," results will not last.

"Don't think that there can be revolutions in this kind of organization, but it's a constant evolution," Guerra said.

How does Prada view the China market?

Guerra described nearly two decades of uninterrupted growth for European luxury firms that entered China early. Today the market is in consolidation and digestion, but the clients remain.

"Now there's a little bit of a consolidation, a little bit of a digestion, but the clients are still always there," he said. "So it's a question of linking to clients properly, to younger, to older, to more affluent, to less affluent.…Change is normal."

He called for a sector reset anchored in authenticity.

"We have to go back to what old luxury was. You need to be authentic. You need to be credible. You need to tell a story that allows people to dream. If we're not able to do this, let's go do something else," he said.

What is the retail strategy?

Two flagship projects anchor the experiential push:

  • Prada Galleria, unveiled during Milan Fashion Week last September, spans eight floors in the historic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade, fusing retail, hospitality, art, heritage and innovation.
  • Prada Rong Zhai in Shanghai occupies a restored 17th-century palace, with a restaurant created by Miuccia Prada and filmmaker Wong Kar Wei, gallery spaces, a garden and private salons for VICs.

"If you ask me, 'Andrea, do you prefer to sell or do you prefer people to come back?' I prefer people to come back," Guerra said.

He noted the group's cultural projects never rely on sponsorship. Linea Rossa's America's Cup participation reflects ownership, and the Fondazione Prada, created 26 years ago, stages its own exhibitions.

What comes next?

On technology, Guerra predicted AI will drive hyper-personalization, enabling one-to-one client conversations. If Prada knows a client loves a specific shoe style, it can alert them when a similar design launches.

On Versace, he acknowledged the scale of the task: "How to make it sexy in 2027? This is the challenge we have, and it's hard. It's in a different world from us."

He added a boundary on group ambition: "We don't want to become a group of brands. We were not looking for a Versace."
