MCM has become the first luxury fashion brand to open a selling channel on Whatnot, the live-shopping platform confirmed on Tuesday, marking a channel decision that puts a 50-year-old German accessories label into a marketplace built on community-driven, entertainment-led commerce.

The launch forms part of MCM's 50th anniversary program. The brand has created dedicated product for the channel and will host its live selling sessions from its New York and Los Angeles flagship stores, using the physical retail footprint as the broadcast studio for the digital channel.

What scale does the platform offer?

Whatnot adds more than 650,000 new buyers every week, according to figures MCM cited when explaining the move. The company's 2027 Consumer Trend Report, released earlier this year, found that 47 percent of those surveyed said they engaged in live shopping in 2026 more than in previous years. Live shopping has become one of the major discovery channels and shopping formats for Gen Z, the report argued.

MCM framed the launch as a way to meet younger luxury shoppers at the intersection of discovery, entertainment and commerce. The brand said the channel offers access to an emerging luxury consumer that traditional retail touchpoints do not reliably reach.

Who sells first, and how?

The debut livestream ran on Tuesday at 6 PM, hosted by seller Corey Shapiro, known on the platform as Vintageframes, who has sold more than 15,000 items through his Whatnot account. Using an established high-volume seller rather than an internal team signals that MCM is leaning on the platform's existing community infrastructure for its first transmission.

Shapiro positioned the assignment in brand terms rather than commercial ones. "The MCM monogram is the rare thing in fashion that belongs to everyone who wears it," he said. "For fifty years it has crossed borders, cultures and generations, one pattern, worn by people from every walk of life and it still means the same thing: you belong."

What does MCM say it wants from the channel?

A representative from MCM, in a statement first shared with WWD, cast the move as a retail experiment rather than a discounted-clearance play. "Luxury has to keep evolving in how it meets its clients. Launching on Whatnot brings MCM's products and stories into a live conversation, giving clients a more direct and participatory way to experience the brand," the representative said. "We're proud to challenge the conventions of luxury retail and build new relationships with our community, while staying true to the creativity and character that make MCM distinctive."

Following the debut, MCM will announce future livestream shopping events on its official channel through whatnot.com and the Whatnot app. No sales targets, exclusive product volumes or revenue-sharing terms were disclosed, so the commercial terms of the arrangement between brand and platform remain unconfirmed.

The test ahead is whether a luxury house can convert a format built on volume sellers and bargain discovery into a channel that protects price integrity — a question the first quarter of livestream sales data from the flagship-hosted channel should begin to answer.
