Marrakshi Life will open its first store at La Mamounia Marrakech, using 200 meters of the label’s handwoven textiles for the interior curtains. The venue sits within the citrus- and palm-filled gardens of the five-star hotel.
The official opening also marks the fourth wedding anniversary of married founders Randall Bachner and Nicholas Minucciani. The founders said on Thursday that they teamed with creative director and designer Gabriella Khalil on the design, her first project on the African continent.
What does the first store establish?
Marrakshi Life, founded in 2013 after Bachner and Minucciani left photography and media careers in New York, operates through an in-house team of local artisans. The team produces contemporary, gender-fluid, made-to-order and ready-to-wear pieces sold worldwide and through upmarket platforms including Moda Operandi and Net-a-porter.
The label, known for handwoven textiles, counts Erykah Badu and Lauren Santo Domingo among its fans. Minucciani said: “La Mamounia felt like a natural fit: It is an iconic institution, and its guests align with our customer. We’re a destination brand.”
The opening adds a direct physical channel to that vertically integrated model, but it does not yet signal a broad store rollout. The announcement gives no opening date, store size or sales target.
How is the store configured?
Khalil, whose work spans hospitality, home and fashion, designed and curated the tent-shaped, vitrine-greenhouse interior. The arrangement puts the label’s textile work at the center of a hospitality retail environment while bringing fashion and home offerings into the same space.
The 200 meters of curtain cloth is the only material quantity disclosed for the entire store, making the scale of the textile commitment concrete.
- Maison Sarayan bespoke furniture created with the label’s signature striped dégradé textiles.
- Custom rugs developed with the female-led rug studio formed by Sana Benzaitar.
- Ceramics by Lrnce.
- A sculptural 1960s Italian Tornado chandelier by Elio Martinelli.
- A French table from the 1990s sourced from Marrakech-based collectible showroom Salmane Design.
The store also features furnishings developed with local players in the upscale design sector. That mix turns the opening into a showroom for the home range, while specialist suppliers make capacity, payment terms and inventory ownership material to the store’s economics.
The announcement gives no order quantities, production lead times, artisan capacity figures or certification status for the furnishing work. Nor does it identify who funds the fit-out, owns the inventory or divides the retail margin.
What does the home push mean for suppliers?
Earlier this year, Marrakshi Life launched a home capsule. Minucciani said the company is developing furniture and objects with its textiles and expects home to account for a larger portion of the business.
That is an expectation, not a reported result. The company disclosed no current home-sales share, order values, margin targets or purchase commitments. The forecast therefore gives suppliers no disclosed volume against which to plan added capacity.
Can hospitality become the next channel?
Minucciani framed the Marrakech opening as a possible template rather than a committed rollout. He said: “If this works, we’d like to explore locations with other luxury properties and groups. We see an opportunity to bring Marrakshi Life to a specific audience through hospitality settings.”
That is an intention, not an announced development program. No further sites, opening dates, capital commitments or trading terms have been announced. For hotel groups and suppliers, the confirmed commitment is one Marrakech location; wider hospitality distribution depends on performance.
Bachner and Minucciani met Khalil seven years ago through the brand’s first caftan collaboration with Palm Heights, where she served as creative director. Khalil later hosted and designed their wedding at the Grand Cayman resort. Minucciani said the La Mamounia project brought the relationship full circle.
What does the hotel add to the channel case?
La Mamounia opened in 1923 and traces its origins to an 18th-century estate that Sultan Mohammed Ben Abdallah gifted. The property combines Arab-Andalusian heritage with Art Deco design. Its history as a retreat for historical figures, artists and leaders includes Winston Churchill, Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin and Nelson Mandela, among others.
The hotel’s existing retail space for fashion accessories, fragrances, objects and art de la table, plus La Boutique Pierre Hermé, a shop dedicated to the creations of the French pastry chef and chocolatier, gives the first store an established retail setting. The announcement gives no footfall, sales target, store area or staffing plan.
The next commercial tests are the store’s sales mix, the contribution from home products and whether Marrakshi Life commits to additional hotel locations; until then, expansion beyond La Mamounia remains a stated possibility rather than an announced program.
