Pitti Uomo has named Kartik Research its second guest designer for the January 2027 edition, with the New Delhi-based menswear label set to unveil its fall 2027 collection at a special event on Jan. 13. The fair runs Jan. 12 to 15 in Florence.
The announcement is confirmed. The presentation itself is not. Organizers and the brand have not disclosed the event's format or location. That gap matters for buyers planning calendars around the four-day fair.
Dunhill was previously announced as a guest designer for the same edition. Pitti Immagine will unveil the full events roster in early November, ahead of a press conference scheduled for Nov. 10 in Milan. Organizers are traveling globally to brief local press and buyers in the interim.
Who is Kartik Research?
Founder Kartik Kumra established the brand in New Delhi in 2021. It was a semifinalist for the LVMH Prize for Young Designers (the luxury group's annual award for emerging talent) in both 2023 and 2026. The label debuted on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar in January 2024 and has shown there consistently since, with one exception: a planned June show was canceled after the employee who managed the Delhi flagship died in Kerala, India.
Kumra's path into the trade is unconventional. He studied economics at the University of Pennsylvania, returned to India during the pandemic and taught himself to sew using YouTube tutorials. He then built a supply base by scouting craftspeople across India to produce different elements of the collections — a decentralized artisanal sourcing model rather than a single-factory setup.
The brand gained visibility when New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wore one of its ties at his swearing-in ceremony in January. Other high-profile wearers include Steph Curry, Lewis Hamilton, Damson Idris and Paul Mescal. Celebrity visibility, however, is not the same as disclosed revenue or production volume. The company has not made financial figures public.
Distribution is documented. Kartik Research operates flagships in Delhi and New York and sells through Mr Porter, Selfridges, Dover Street Market, Harrods and Lane Crawford, among other retailers.
What did the two sides say?
Kumra framed the Florence slot as continuation, not a pivot. "I'm very grateful to the Pitti Immagine team for this opportunity. When you look at the creatives who have passed through the guest designer program over the years, it's a pretty special list to find yourself on, and certainly not something I take for granted," he said.
"For us, it feels like an opportunity to keep building in the same way we always have, while allowing the world around us to push the work somewhere new," Kumra added. He cited the historical trade route between Indian textiles and Florentine merchants as a thematic anchor for the season — Indian cloth once moved through Florence and shaped the city's visual language, and this presentation reverses that flow.
Francesca Tacconi, special events manager at Pitti Immagine, positioned the selection as a craft-and-culture call rather than a commercial one. "Kartik Research's approach is instinctive and sees craftsmanship as a living language and a source of fresh perspectives, far removed from any nostalgic celebration of the past," she said. She added that Indian techniques and textiles are "entering the global conversation, moving beyond the lens of exoticism."
What does the slot signal for sourcing?
Guest designer status at Pitti Uomo functions as a channel decision as much as an honor. The program has previously hosted Simone Rocha, Kei Ninomiya of Dover Street Market, Hed Mayner, Homme Plissé Issey Miyake, MM6 Maison Margiela, Setchu, Marine Serre, Martine Rose and Grace Wales Bonner.
For a five-year-old label that already shows in Paris, Florence adds a buyer-facing menswear audience and an Italian trade platform. What it does not add, on current evidence, is disclosed capacity figures, certification details or production timelines — the operational data sourcing executives typically interrogate before treating a craft narrative as a supply story.
The Nov. 10 Milan press conference should clarify the event format, venue and surrounding schedule; until then, the Jan. 13 date and the guest designation are the only firm facts on the table.
