The 66th Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress will run September 14-16, 2027 — a day earlier than its customary slot — because ITMA 2027 lands in Hanover the same week, and the organisers intend for delegates to do both.

For the first time, the two events coincide. Dornbirn GFC covers fibre innovation, scientific research and emerging material developments; ITMA, in Hanover, Germany, exhibits textile and apparel manufacturing machinery and technology. One week, two countries, two halves of the same supply chain.

The organisers expect the overlap to create additional opportunities for international networking and knowledge exchange, joining research, materials development and industrial applications in a single diary window.

What does the overlap change for sourcing teams?

In practical terms, travel budgets. A delegate covering both events can pair a research congress in Austria with a machinery fair in northern Germany inside one trip rather than two — a modest saving on flights, a larger one on calendar time. Material developers scouting fibre innovations and mills evaluating capital equipment have rarely had the option to do both in a single week.

Five themes on the agenda

Dornbirn GFC 2027 will focus on five principal themes:

  • fibre innovations and new material developments;
  • the circular economy and advances in recycling technologies;
  • developments in nonwovens, paper and pulp;
  • new processing technologies for spinning, weaving and finishing;
  • protective clothing.

A particular emphasis will sit on translating scientific research into practical industrial applications, with the organisers aiming to strengthen collaboration between research institutions and manufacturers. That framing matters for vendors: contributions must demonstrate industrial relevance, not laboratory novelty.

Call for papers opens mid-November 2026

Researchers, developers and industry specialists can submit presentations covering new scientific findings, technological advances and practical innovations once the call opens in mid-November 2026. The organisers say they are particularly interested in contributions showing industrial relevance and encouraging dialogue between research and industry. Further details of the submission process will follow in November.

Venue, tickets and the accommodation question

The congress returns to the Kulturhaus Dornbirn. Delegates are advised to arrange accommodation early, given expected demand during the week — sound advice in a town of Dornbirn's size when a coinciding ITMA pushes international visitors toward the same Alpine hotels.

Ticket sales open at the end of March 2027. Those wanting notification when registration begins can contact the organisers at [email protected]; event details are at www.dornbirn-gfc.com.

The date shift is small. The coordination behind it is not.
