Ted Baker opened a stand-alone store in London on Friday, its first company-branded retail presence in the UK since Authentic Brands Group acquired the business in 2022. The 155 Fenchurch Street location sits in the heart of the city's financial district and trades under the name Ted Baker Tailored.

The store's commercial logic is straightforward: menswear built on British tailoring traditions, with suits and everyday essentials as the core offer. Authentic is positioning the format as a test of whether the brand's founding category can still command dedicated retail space in its home market, where Ted Baker once held a prominent position on the high street.

"This opening is an important milestone for Ted Baker in its home market and a reaffirmation of the brand's British heritage and the enduring relevance of the category where it all began," said Henry Stupp, president, lifestyle EMEAI at Authentic. "We're building on the qualities that have long distinguished Ted Baker, its approach to tailoring, craftsmanship and distinctly British point of view, while evolving the brand for today's consumer. London is the natural place to begin, and we see this opening as a defining step in the brand's next chapter."

The operating model matters as much as the address. Suit Direct, the brand's licensee outside the US, runs the store and has designed and produced Ted Baker suiting for several years. That gives the format a licensed structure rather than direct ownership — Authentic collects licensing income while its partner carries the retail lease, fit-out and inventory exposure.

"Having designed and produced Ted Baker suiting for many years, Suit Direct has a deep understanding of the brand and its distinctive approach to British tailoring," said Tim Murphy, chief executive officer of Suit Direct. "Ted Baker Tailored represents an exciting new chapter in that partnership — bringing together our expertise in craftsmanship, attention to detail and contemporary style in a dedicated retail space. We're proud to bring this new experience to London and look forward to welcoming customers."

Neither company disclosed the store's square footage, lease terms or sales targets, so the opening's scale remains an announced intention rather than a measured result.

The return marks a shift in strategy after a turbulent period. Ray Kelvin founded Ted Baker in 1988, and the brand became a fixture of British retail with its colorful, trend-driven take on the seasons. Kelvin resigned in 2019 amid staff complaints about inappropriate physical contact, which he consistently denied. The company then faced a series of crises before Authentic acquired it in 2022.

Authentic has since rebuilt Ted Baker as a licensing operation. In the US, United Legwear & Apparel holds the license and produces the core Ted Baker collection as well as the Ted by Ted Baker subbrand, which debuted at Macy's in August. The London store extends the same model into the UK through Suit Direct.

For sourcing and supply-chain professionals, the structure signals where production decisions now sit: Suit Direct controls suiting design and manufacturing outside the US, while United Legwear & Apparel manages the American product base. Brands weighing Ted Baker as a wholesale or retail partner will deal with licensees rather than a central design house.

Authentic describes the Fenchurch Street opening as the first step in the brand's next chapter, which suggests further UK retail moves could follow if the tailoring-led format proves out.
