Payoneer has renewed its payments partnership with Etsy through 2029, extending an arrangement that has served tens of thousands of marketplace sellers since the two companies first partnered in 2023.
The three-year agreement keeps Payoneer as a strategic payments partner to Etsy sellers across 16 markets in Asia, Europe, South America and the Middle East. The companies did not disclose financial terms.
The deal matters commercially because it secures the payout infrastructure behind Etsy's seller base in emerging and volatile markets — geographies where cross-border sales to Western customers often account for the majority of a micro-seller's revenue. Ya Wen, senior vice president of global marketplaces at Payoneer, said the strongest cross-border activity comes from sellers in Ukraine, India, China, Thailand and Pakistan, "where sellers rely heavily on sales to Western markets."
"Small businesses are increasingly selling across borders, currencies and markets," Wen said. "That makes the financial infrastructure behind their businesses an important piece in their success. Our continued partnership with Etsy reflects a shared commitment to help marketplaces solve these cross-border challenges at scale."
What sellers actually get
Through the partnership, eligible Etsy sellers receive earnings in U.S. dollars, withdraw directly to local bank accounts and manage funds across more than 70 currencies. Behind the consumer-facing payout experience, Payoneer also handles onboarding, Know Your Customer (KYC) due diligence, risk and fraud management, and compliance for the marketplace.
That back-office layer is the substance of the deal. Compliance and KYC obligations differ sharply across the 16 covered markets, and Etsy has effectively outsourced that variability to Payoneer rather than building localized financial rails itself. Megan Oxman, senior director of product at Etsy, framed the renewal in those terms: "Payoneer has been a trusted partner, helping us support sellers across markets with very different operational and regulatory environments."
The vendor economics
The case of KGUmusic and MG Leather Work, a Ukraine-based seller of handcrafted instruments and leather accessories, illustrates the supply-chain profile of the sellers the deal covers. Founder Maksym Gopanchuk sources specialized components internationally, manufactures and finishes in Ukraine, and sells through Etsy, other marketplaces, dealers, distributors and his own websites. Roughly 80 percent of his sales currently come from the U.S., with the rest spread across Europe, the UK, Asia and Australia.
"When local market conditions can change literally overnight, access to the global market and reliable international partners make it possible to keep moving forward," Gopanchuk said. "Etsy helps our brands reach customers across different countries, while Payoneer provides the payment infrastructure that makes our international sales possible."
Wen said tariffs, currency volatility and other market disruptions are pushing small sellers to diversify where and how they sell. The counterweight is operational: once a business expands across markets, it must manage multiple currencies, payment flows, compliance requirements and cash flow. The financial infrastructure supporting the business, Wen argued, directly influences its ability to scale.
The strategic read
For marketplaces competing for sellers in emerging markets, embedded payments have become table stakes. Payoneer's pitch to platforms like Etsy is a single partner that can cover the full seller journey — onboarding, payout, compliance — across markets with very different banking and regulatory environments, sparing the marketplace from building that infrastructure market by market.
For sellers, the value proposition is simpler: less time on the mechanics of moving money internationally, more time on products and customers. "For some of the businesses we support, international customers account for the majority of their sales," Wen said.
With the renewal locked in through 2029, both companies are betting that small-business cross-border selling on marketplaces will keep growing despite tariff pressure and currency risk — and that sellers in markets like Ukraine, India and Pakistan will keep needing a payout rail they cannot easily build themselves.
