Nike is extending its running footwear lineup with a three-shoe "race-day system of speed," betting the category that has driven its turnaround can keep delivering against a resurgent Adidas.

The Beaverton, Ore.-based company unveiled the system on Wednesday, comprising the new Apex and Swooshfly sneakers plus the Alphafly 4. The Alphafly 4 launches in October, followed by the Apex in January 2027 and the Swooshfly in February 2027. The staggered rollout gives Nike a fresh performance flagship for the fall marathon season while pushing its new silhouettes into early 2027.

"Race day is one of the most meaningful moments in a runner's journey, but that moment looks different for everyone," Bret Schoolmeester, vice president of Nike Running footwear, said in a statement. "With Nike Apex, Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly, we created a system that helps runners choose the experience they want on race day, whether that means finding the confidence to step onto a starting line for the first time or chasing every possible second in pursuit of a breakthrough performance."

The launch comes with hard numbers behind it. CEO Elliott Hill told analysts on the fourth quarter 2026 conference call in July that running grew to $5 billion, up $1 billion over the last five quarters, with five market share points gained. He described "consecutive quarters of double-digit growth in Nike Running" and said share gains in statement footwear during fiscal 2026 across Western Europe and North America exceeded those of any other top-five brand.

The growth rate, however, is decelerating. BNP Paribas analyst Laurent Vasilescu noted in July that running grew high-single-digit percent in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, over 20 percent in the first three quarters of fiscal 2026, then slowed to mid-single-digit growth in the fourth quarter. He estimated Nike Running at $4.4 billion on a four-quarter basis, roughly 10 percent of company revenue.

Adidas is pressing the same opportunity. "Running has never been stronger," Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden told analysts on the company's second quarter call in July. "I think it's fair to say that we are winning with running. We are winning competitions on the road, on the track. We are sponsoring big events and our running shoes in general are having great sell-throughs, which was not the case three years ago."

The competitive pressure showed in results, not just rhetoric. All six podium finishers at the Berlin Marathon on Sunday competed in the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3, the $500 shoe released earlier this year. At its London Marathon debut in April, the model carried Sabastian Sawe to a 1:59:30 record and Tigist Assefa to a women's record of 2:15:41.

Nike's last headline marathon win came in 2023, when the late Kelvin Kiptum ran 2:00:35 at Chicago in the Air Zoom Alphafly 3 — the first sub-2:01 in a sanctioned race.

The category carries financial weight. Nike reported fourth quarter 2026 net sales of $10.97 billion, down 1 percent from $11.09 billion a year earlier on a reported basis and down 4 percent currency-neutral. Running remains the clearest growth engine within that top line.

Nike reports first quarter 2027 earnings on Oct. 1, when investors will get the first read on whether the Alphafly 4 launch can sustain the category's momentum into the new fiscal year.
