EXCLUSIVE: Lemaire Appoints Clarisse Godbillon as Managing Director

Lemaire has named Clarisse Godbillon managing director, effective October, bringing back a former chief operations officer after a one-year stint at Jacquemus and installing a finance-rooted executive at the top of one of France's few independently held fashion houses.

Godbillon succeeds Laetitia Mergui, who held the chief executive officer title and left in February after nearly four years. The gap between Mergui's exit and the October appointment — roughly seven months — leaves observers to speculate on interim arrangements. The company has not detailed them.

Who pays for growth, and who decides

The controlling question for any independent brand of Lemaire's size is governance, and the answer here is unambiguous. Artistic directors Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran remain the majority shareholders, and their statement frames the new hire in explicitly financial terms.

"Our independence rests on the economic strength of the company and the careful management of its development. Growth is not an end in itself; it must enable us to create and produce better," the pair declared. "Clarisse Godbillon embodies the house's purpose and carries its fundamental principles with conviction."

That is a shareholder message, not a marketing one. It signals that capacity, production discipline and margin control — not revenue velocity — will set the pace of expansion.

A promote-from-inside profile

Godbillon's record is unusually legible for a luxury executive. A graduate of HEC Paris and Sciences Po Paris, she began in mergers, acquisitions and business development before moving into strategic advisory for fashion companies. She joined Lemaire in 2020 as chief financial officer and was promoted to chief operations officer in 2023.

Her year at Jacquemus, a larger independent French label with its own scaling ambitions, now reads as a brief detour rather than a defection. Lemaire effectively rehired an executive who already knew its systems, its factories and its shareholders.

"We are opening a new chapter for the house, with a clear ambition: to ensure its vitality, longevity and independence, both cultural and economic," Godbillon said. "We want to nurture what makes us unique: the quality and design of our products, the power of our spaces to inspire, and the attention we give to the experience of our clients and collaborators."

What does this change for the retail footprint?

In the short term, likely continuity. The appointment lands on top of an already accelerating store program:

  • January: the brand's largest flagship to date opened in Shanghai.
  • Later in the year: a third Paris store launched in the Galerie de Montpensier arcade bordering the Palais-Royal garden.
  • Last week: a new corner carrying women's and men's lines opened at Shinsegae Daegu in South Korea.
  • Separately, an exhibition devoted to French illustrator and cartoonist Roland Topor opened at the Elzévir outpost in the Marais, accompanied by a capsule of clothing and accessories featuring his works.

South Korea and China are clearly the growth vectors; Europe expansion is measured, one arcade at a time.

The Uniqlo chapter closes

One revenue stream is now formally ended. Lemaire and Tran signed their final collection for Unqlo's U line for fall 2026, which reached stores in August. The mass-market licensing collaboration, long a volume engine for the house's visibility in Asia, will not be renewed under this watch — a decision that concentrates attention on how the directly operated retail network replaces that income.

For sourcing and supply-chain watchers, the signal is a house that prefers slower, self-funded growth over licensed reach. Godbillon's first full year will show whether that arithmetic holds.
