Spec notes

  1. Dowsil IE-5619 is a 30% solids silicone-organic hybrid emulsion, fluoro-free.
  2. Typical application: 1-3% on fabric weight; curing 1-3 minutes at 150°C or above.
  3. Dow claims repellency holds after more than 20 domestic laundering cycles.
  4. Product is available globally to formulators, mills and brands.
  5. Performance requires validation per fabric type and finishing formulation.

Dow has launched Dowsil IE-5619 DWOR Emulsion, a 30% solids silicone-organic hybrid finish that claims durable water and oil repellency without fluorinated chemistry. The product is available globally to textile chemical formulators, mills and brands from today, with Dow offering technical support to validate performance on individual fabrics and production lines.

The launch targets a hard commercial problem. Effective oil repellency has traditionally required fluorinated chemistries, which face tightening restrictions across major markets. Mills and brands that drop fluoro finishes usually lose oil resistance. Dow says its third-generation silicone-organic hybrid technology closes that gap.

What performance does Dow claim?

The emulsion repels oil-based contaminants including cooking oils, motor oil and sebum, plus water-based stains such as coffee, wine and milk. Dow reports the treatment maintains water and oil repellency after more than 20 domestic laundering cycles. Results depend on fabric construction and formulation, according to the company.

"For years, achieving meaningful oil repellency in textiles typically required fluorinated chemistries, which are now facing increasing restrictions," said Juan Carlos Medina, global strategic marketing director at Dow. "Dowsil IE-5619 helps close that gap with a silicone-based, fluoro-alternative solution that delivers durable water and oil repellency while preserving the softness, breathability and aesthetics consumers expect."

What are the process parameters?

The formulation integrates into conventional textile finishing processes. Key application data:

  • Concentration: 30% solids
  • Application level: 1-3% based on fabric weight
  • Curing: one to three minutes at temperatures of at least 150°C
  • Adjustability: conditions can be tuned to specific production requirements

The cure window of one to three minutes at 150°C or above fits standard finishing ranges. Sourcing teams should note that performance must be validated for individual fabric types and finishing formulations before committing volumes.

Which fabrics and what compliance upside?

Dow positions the product for natural, synthetic and blended fabrics. Beyond repellency, the technology maintains a soft handle and breathability, and allows adhesion of tapes and logos without additional surface treatments — a process step mills can potentially cut.

For brands, the chemistry offers a route to fluoro-free claims as PFAS restrictions tighten. For mills, it removes the compliance exposure of fluorinated finishing lines. Dow frames the technology as a further step toward replacing fluorinated textile finishes where both durability and resistance to water and oily contaminants are required.

All performance figures remain Dow's own claims rather than independent test results, so buyers should press for third-party laundering and repellency data during validation. Dow says its technical teams will support mills in verifying results on specific fabrics and production lines before scale-up.
